The Simson S51/1 was more than just a moped - it was freedom on two wheels.
A dream for many young people in East Germany, it is now a cult object and a symbol of East German technological history.

The German motorcycle manufacturer Simson produced the Simson S 51, the direct successor to the S 50. At the time, the S50 and S51 were the most widely produced mopeds with over 1,600,000 units.
According to an exception in the Unification Treaty, both mopeds were driven with an insurance number plate without registration, although the maximum speed was 60 kph (37 mph).
Compared to the S50, the S51 moped had a newly designed two-stroke engine with a modified bore and stroke that improved torque at low and medium speeds, allowing more pulling power on inclines and two-up operation.
In the visual department, the motorcycle was characterized by features like a round headlight up front, a one-piece dual seat, a single exhaust system with a silencer mounted on the right-hand side, a center stand, and wire-spoke wheels.
The motorcycle packed a telescopic fork on the front and two side-mounted shock absorbers on the rear for suspension. Braking-wise, both wheels were fitted with drum braking units.
The 1980 Simson S 51 was powered by a 50cc two-stroke single-cylinder air-cooled engine fed by a carburetor, boasting 4 hp at 5,500 rpm and 5 Nm (4 lb-ft) torque at 4,800 rpm. A three-speed manual transmission and a final chain drive redirected the engine's power to the rear end.
