It utilizes a combination of precious metal catalysts (platinum, palladium, and rhodium) coated on a ceramic or metallic honeycomb substrate. The TWC operates through two simultaneous chemical processes: oxidation (converting CO and HC into CO2 and H2O) and reduction (transforming NOx into N2 and O2). Designed to function optimally at high temperatures (300-900°C), it ensures compliance with stringent environmental regulations (e.g., Euro 6, EPA Tier 3) while improving air quality. Advanced TWCs feature enhanced durability, low backpressure designs, and compatibility with hybrid engines, making them indispensable for eco-conscious automotive manufacturers and aftermarket upgrades.

Core Components & Mechanism

Substrate Structure: A honeycomb-like ceramic (cordierite) or metallic monolith with thousands of parallel channels, maximizing surface area for catalytic reactions.
Washcoat: A porous layer (e.g., gamma-alumina, CeO2-ZrO2 oxides) applied to the substrate, stabilizing catalyst nanoparticles and enhancing oxygen storage capacity.
Catalyst Loading:
- Oxidation Catalysts: Platinum (Pt) and Palladium (Pd) for CO and HC oxidation.
- Reduction Catalyst: Rhodium (Rh) for NOx reduction.
